Manchester: Intervention

Manchester Intervention

As a response to the urban analysis of Manchester an intervention was designed in Fairfield, East Manchester with the desire of encouraging social interaction. With reference to Le Corbusier's city of three million inhabitants and Frank Lloyd Wright's Broadacre City, which both aspired to a utopian vision, a master plan of Fairfield was designed, reconfiguring the housing. The result was a series of housing clusters each inhabited by different social groups, creating micro societies of like-minded inhabitants. The reality of a utopian design strategy was examined through the evaluation of the intervention, as segregating a community according to their demographic would sterilise the cultural interaction within the city and potentially create dystopia.
