Ideas Competition: Chatham Skin

Here are images for my competition entry to re-design a skin for the Chatham Building of the Art and Design Faculty at the Manchester Metropolitan University which also houses the Manchester School of Architecture. My design ensures the development of an iconic building representing and stimulating vital aspects of the creativity of the faculty. Based on the principles of a trombe wall the skin combines a living environment for fish as well as ensuring thermal efficiency for the building.

Site analysis at a meso-scale led to site selection at a micro-level for a hybrid development. Mapping was carried out in response to active engagement with the community as well as desk-work such as data collection from a range of sources. Using an understanding of the social geography of the area an intervention was designed which replicated a successful housing model across the district. Each cluster of housing was designed for the different demographic found in the city’s population (for example, single parents). The urban analysis of the area was conveyed through a conceptual video that highlighted the different socio-economic make-up of inhabitants at a meso-scale.
